Great Place To Live In West Bloomfield Township, Michigan 48323

West Bloomfield Township Michigan is one of the most diverse, affluent and greatest places to live in the entire state of Michigan. The township is divided into several areas including Keego Harbor, Orchard Lake and Sylvan Lake and is surrounded by three lakes which give the area its name. The township is home to the prestigious West Bloomfield School District which is recognized as one of the best public schools in the country. The township is also home to the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit and many other Jewish schools and institutions.

The township is a great place to live for families with an abundance of parks and recreational activities for children of all ages. It is a safe, highly-educated, and very affluent community with one of the highest median incomes in Michigan. It is a very multicultural community which represents most of the world’s religions with many temples, synagogues, and mosques located within its borders.

There are also a wide variety of housing styles for residents to choose from including cabin-style bungalows with one or two bedrooms all the way up to sprawling waterfront estates consisting of six plus bedrooms and everything in between. The many lakes that surround the township also gave rise to an industry of cottage rentals which continues today. West Bloomfield is also known for its beautiful topography which is a result of the action of numerous glaciers that encroached on the area over time. The glaciers left behind hills, small lakes, and large boulders which are visible throughout the township.

The earliest settlers in the West Bloomfield Township region were Paleo-Indians who arrived when the Ice Age glaciers began to recede from the area around 10,000 B.C. They were hunter-gatherers and lived in small bands. They hunted large mammals such as mastodons using spears fitted with fluted stone points.

By the late 1800s the township was developing as a summer destination for wealthy city-folk from Detroit who purchased cottages along the many lakes and built second homes in the area. By this time there was a rail connection to Detroit which made the trip into town relatively convenient. It was also at this time that General Amos Hall was elected to the county legislature.

The Greater West Bloomfield Historical Society provides an array of events and educational opportunities for residents to learn about the rich history of this wonderful community. The museum is open to the public and is a must-see for visitors to the area. The John Marshall collection of historic homes is also available at the Historical Society and contains material on houses in the towns of Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, and Bloomfield Township. A few of the historic homes are located in the Keego Harbor area and a few are in the nearby village of Orchard Lake. The collection consists of thousands of photos and documents that contain much valuable information on the history of these buildings.
